Using game elements to create interactive, engaging instruction doesn't have to mean investing hours and hours into the development of a full-scale Halo-type game. Creating a classroom-based interactive, game-like learning experience can be done simply and easily with PowerPoint, a little imagination, and an audience response system. In this workshop, you will create an interactive game-like learning experience using game thinking and game elements such as storytelling, mystery, immediate feedback, and friendly competition. Learn how to craft a gamified instructional story based on learning science to engage, motivate and educate your learners.

Karl M. Kapp, Ed.D., is a professor of Instructional Technology at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, PA. where he teaches game design and gamification classes. He serves as the Director of Bloomsburg’s Institute for Interactive Technologies which works with organizations to create interactive instruction including games and simulations. He has authored or co-authored six books including “The Gamification of Learning and Instruction” and its accompanying how-to-book “The Gamification of Learning and Instruction Fieldbook” and is author of two Lynda.com courses including the “Gamification of Learning.” Karl’s work explores the research, theoretical foundations and application of gamification and effective game-based learning, Karl has served as a Co-Principle Investigator on two National Science Foundation (NSF) grants related to games and simulations and serves as an external evaluator on a third game-related NSF grant. He is co-founder of the educational game company 2Klearning.com, founder of the educational consulting firm, The Wisdom Learning Group, LLC, a TEDx speaker, a member of the editorial board of eLearn Magazine and is an advisor for several technology companies. He speaks and consults internationally helping organizations with the convergence of games, learning and technology. You can follow his blog (Kapp Notes) at http://karlkapp.com/kapp-notes/.

NOTE: Please bring a laptop or a tablet with PowerPoint and a phone capable of texting so that you can both experience and design engaging game-like instruction.
