When someone, at ATD of course, said ‘you should write a class on how to speak when you aren’t vocally healthy and you have to go on’, it made perfect sense. This is that class.

Surely you’ve experienced that sore throat that’s dry and scratchy, leaves you clearing your throat, and brings those momentary tears to your eyes. Who hasn’t had that wet, messy cold that’s stuck in your nose, makes your eyes run constantly, and plugs your ears? If you’ve had a speaking engagement during one of these, it can be daunting, scary, uncomfortable, and leave you wondering if you should cancel - until you think about the already-paid-for plane ticket and hotel, the fee, the event... And you know you're not going to cancel.

Join us for this active discussion that will offer tools such as warm up exercises, throat sprays and gargles used by professional singers, tricks to help you salivate when dry, what not to eat, calm down, use of the breath, projecting, and so on. We’re going to listen to sound examples, get up and make some noise (not loud), get a sense of what it feels like to move your vocal placement around, and generally play with sound.

Presenter: Lisa Schwanger

Lisa Schwanger has a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance degree from UNC-G. She put it to use as a singer/actor in musical theater (Phantom, Into the Woods, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Menopause the Musical, Titanic the musical national tour, etc.). Since all actors need side jobs when starting out, she worked as a consultant tech trainer in between jobs, and transitioned permanently to a career in training when she left NYC.
