At our October Instructional Design CoP meeting, our facilitator, Kathleen Hill will discuss the importance of creating and fostering a hospitable environment for learners into our instructional designs. In her research, Mrs. Hill discovered there are three roles (instructional systems designer, program director, and instructor) that when functioning at high levels, contribute to enhanced learner engagement and decreased attrition. Through her framework, she constructs a hospitality framework where the functioning of these roles can be understood within an interdependent system. Though designed for the distance education classroom, this framework can also be applied to the traditional classroom with few modifications. In this highly interactive session, Mrs. Hill will encourage participants to explore interventions that can assist in the development of a more hospitable environment for learning.

Presenter:  Kathleen Hill

Kathleen Hill is an Instructional Systems Designer (ISD), ATD Certified Master Trainer, and Synchronous Learning Expert (SLE) with experience designing and facilitating courses on varied topics. Mrs. Hill holds a master’s degree in Distance Education and eLearning and wrote her dissertation on creating a hospitality framework for the distance education classroom.
