Making ADDIE more Agile. ADDIE is a product of mid-20th century industrial thinking. At the time of its creation, it was appropriate and needed. But by the 80s, practitioners already knew the weaknesses of this waterfall-style method, suffering from the same challenges confronting software projects. “Some of the things that we learn invalidate our design and we must backtrack,” says an article in the journal IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering. Every day you should be learning something new about the project you’re working on (or you’re not really trying!). ADDIE doesn’t adapt to this kind of velocity in modern life. Enter Agile Software Development – a strong reaction to the constraints of the waterfall-style software project, and if you didn’t notice, currently taking over the world…because it works. This session will take a deep dive into Agile principles and discover how to adapt these principles to Instructional Design. We will discuss the alternatives to ADDIE; key concepts from Agile that make learning design and development better; and examine hits and misses with a case study of adopting Agile instructional design with a federal client. Chris King puts 25 years of experience behind his title of Chief Learning Provocateur at CEEK, where he creates learning that actually improves performance and changes workplace behaviors. He fully embraces CEEK’s unofficial mission: to rid the world of zombies in the workforce. With credentials that include PMP, Certified ScrumMaster, 5 Moments of Need® Designer, and a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® certified facilitator, Chris brings additional viewpoints to the typical approach to learning development. Not long ago on a DHS contract, he and his team of ISDs adopted Agile instructional design and used it to successfully deliver several courses to the client. He shares his experiences regularly at ATD, Training Magazine, and Learning Guild conferences. He serves on the Executive Board of the Training Officers Consortium as the Chief Technologist. On top of all that, he is also a dad, husband, musician, and outdoorsman.
